Review: Borha aur Samandar

Borha aur Samandar is Urdu translation of Old man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. the urdu translated version is written by Shahid Hameed. Ernest Miller Hemingway (July 21, 1899 – July 2, 1961) was an American journalist, novelist, and short-story writer. His economical and understated style—which he termed the iceberg theory—had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction, while his adventurous lifestyle and his public image brought him admiration from later generations. Hemingway produced most of his work between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s, and he won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. He published seven novels, six short-story collections, and two non-fiction works. Three of his novels, four short story collections, and three non-fiction works were published posthumously. Many of his works are considered classics of American literature.
Shortly after the publication of The Old Man and the Sea (1952), Hemingway went on safari to Africa, where he was almost killed in two successive plane crashes that left him in pain or ill-health for much of the rest of his life. Hemingway maintained permanent residences in Key West, Florida (in the 1930s) and Cuba (in the 1940s and 1950s). In 1959, he bought a house in Ketchum, Idaho, where, in mid-1961, he shot himself in the head.

His uncle, Mahabir, a rich landowner, nicknamed him "Nawab" ("Prince"). His novels describe the problems of the poor and the urban middle-class. His works depict a rationalistic outlook, which views religious values as something that allows the powerful hypocrites to exploit the weak. He used literature for the purpose of arousing public awareness about national and social issues and often wrote about topics related to corruption, child widowhood, prostitution, feudal system, poverty, colonialism and on the India's freedom movement.

Aik Siasat Kai Kahaniyan Review:

Aik Siasat Kai Kahaniyan is written by a famous journalist Rauf Klasra, The book is filled with palace intrigues and power games in Pakistani politics. Former friends ditching old friends for new ones, relationships breaking due to assumed personal slights, grudges due to flippant remarks exploited by willing sycophants, and professional flatterers and go-betweens archiving high office, in short the political arena of Pakistan is exactly like a children's playground without any adult supervision. Most Pakistani politicians are in politics due to their privileged contacts not ideologies. There is little merit and a lot of opportunism, that is primarily the reason why most of them are easily played by army generals who have risen on merit. That makes sense as Pakistan Army is run on democratic principles where anyone can rise to the top slot regardless to caste or creed. The book is filled with political gems like when referring to Farouq Leghari's dismissal of Benazir's PPP government in the 90's, the author makes the following very astute point, how could Leghari choose to retain office after dismissing the corrupt government of PPP when he was put in office by the support of exactly same 'corrupt' people?

Aflatoon's Riyasat Review:

Riyasat is the Urdu translation of Aflatoon or Plato's book The Republic, The Republic is a Socratic dialogue, written by Plato around 380 BC, concerning justice, the order and character of the just city-state, and the just man.
Along with his teacher, Socrates, and his most famous student, Aristotle, Plato laid the very foundations of Western philosophy and science. Alfred North Whitehead once noted: "the safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato. In addition to being a foundational figure for Western science, philosophy, and mathematics, Plato has also often been cited as one of the founders of Western religion and spirituality. Friedrich Nietzsche, amongst other scholars, called Christianity, "Platonism for the people. Plato's influence on Christian thought is often thought to be mediated by his major influence on Saint Augustine of Hippo, one of the most important philosophers and theologians in the history of Christianity.
Plato was the innovator of the written dialogue and dialectic forms in philosophy, which originate with him. Plato appears to have been the founder of Western political philosophy, with his Republic, and Laws among other dialogues, providing some of the earliest extant treatments of political questions from a philosophical perspective. Plato's own most decisive philosophical influences are usually thought to have been Socrates, Parmenides, Heraclitus and Pythagoras, although few of his predecessors' works remain extant and much of what we know about these figures today derives from Plato himself.

Rich dad Poor dad Review:

Rich Dad Poor Dad is the story of a person (the narrator and author) who has two fathers: the first was his biological father – the poor dad - and the other was the father of his childhood best friend, Mike – the rich dad. Both fathers taught the author how to achieve success but with very disparate approaches.
It became evident to the author which father's approach made more financial sense. Throughout the book, the author compares both fathers – their principles, ideas, financial practices, and degree of dynamism and how his real father, the poor and struggling but highly educated man, paled against his rich dad in terms of asset building and business acumen.
The author compares his poor dad to those people who are perpetually scampering in the Rat Race, helplessly trapped in a vicious cycle of needing more but never able to satisfy their dreams for wealth because of one glaring lack: financial literacy. They spend so much time in school learning about the problems of the world, but have not acquired any valuable lessons about money, simply because it is never taught in school. His rich dad, by contrast, represents the independently wealthy core of society who deliberately takes advantage of the power of corporations and their personal knowledge of tax and accounting (or that of their financial advisers) which they manipulate to their advantage. This is the Complete Urdu Translation of this Great book.

Pakistan Anti Terrorism Act Review:

Anti-terrorism legislation are laws with the purpose of fighting terrorism. They usually, if not always, follow specific bombings or assassinations. Anti-terrorism legislation usually includes specific amendments allowing the state to bypass its own legislation when fighting terrorism-related crimes, under the grounds of necessity.
Because of this, suspension of regular procedure, such legislation is sometimes criticized as a form of lois scélérates which may unjustly repress all kinds of popular protests. Critics often allege that anti-terrorism legislation endangers democracy by creating a state of exception that allows authoritarian style of government.

Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan Review:

Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan is the undisputed hero of Pakistan's nuclear saga. Called "the father of the Islamic bomb," Dr. Khan pioneered and led Pakistan's effort to enrich uranium with gas centrifuges. In 1976 he took charge of the secretive Engineering Research Laboratories at Kahuta, now named the A.Q. Khan Research Laboratories in his honor, where he assembled the machinery and manpower it would take to produce weapon-grade uranium. Khan recruited scores of Pakistani scientists living abroad to work with him at Kahuta, boasting that "the scientists and engineers whom I recruited had never heard of a centrifuge, even though some of them were Ph.D.'s."
Khan was born in 1936 in Bhopal, British India, into an Urdu-speaking family who were originally ethnic Pashtun.  His mother, Zulekha (née Begum), a housewife; his father, Abdul Ghafoor was an alumnus of Nagpur University and an academic who served in the British Indian Education ministry who permanently settled the family in Bhopal State after his retirement in 1935.  After the violent partition of India in 1947, his family emigrated from India to Pakistan in 1952, and settled in Karachi, Sindh. Briefly attending the D.J. Science College, he enrolled in Karachi University in 1956 to study physics.  In 1960, he graduated with degree in physics with minor in mathematics, where his degree concentration was in solid-state physics.
For a short time, Khan worked for the city government as an inspector of weights and measures. In 1961, he went to Germany to study metallurgy at the Technical University in Berlin (TU Berlin) but made a transfer to Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands in 1965.  At Delft, he obtained engineer's degree in technology (an equivalent to MS) in 1967 and joined the Catholic University of Leuven for his doctoral studies. Supervised by Dr. Martin Brabers at Leuven University, Khan received D.Eng. in metallurgical engineering in 1972. His doctoral thesis dealt and contained fundamental work on martensite, and its extended industrial applications to the field of morphology— a field that studies the shape, size, texture and phase distribution of physical objects.
